Boy to Man

In the story Holes by Lois Sachar, the main character Stanley was wrongly convicted for stealing shoes. He was sent to Camp Green Lake where he had to dig holes everyday in the hot sun. Stanley and his family were being cursed because of no-good-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. He had negative attitude before he came to Camp Green Lake because he though nothing is going to happen even if he tried. The campers are digging because the warden of camp green lake is looking for something. Stanley is going to dig it out and find it. However, during his time at camp green lake, Stanley changes in many ways, he changed by having friends and confidence in himself.

Stanley came to Camp Green Lake from his home. He didn't have much confidence in himself. Al school a bully named Derrick Dunne often bullied Stanley, but, teachers didn't take that seriously because Derrick was shorter than Stanley. Derrick had taken Stanley's notebook and, after a long game he put in the toilet in the boys bathroom (pg 23).He was a loner and didn't have any friends at home. He was overweight and the kids at middle school often teased about size (pg 9). Because he didn't have anybody to support him, he didn't have much confidence and became a victim and outcast at school.

After going to Camp Green Lake he became more confident in himself. He became stronger, physically and mentally. He became stronger by digging holes and having friends. He became friends with the campers. The campers started to call him Caveman. They always support him if anybody in camp bullies him. He is now able to fight against people. Stanley made a feeble attempt to punch Zigzag (pg135). He became physically stronger to fight against people when people are troubling him. Before, he was home he was not able to fight against Derrick but, after he came he has changed a lot. After that Zero ran away, Stanley wants to go and find him. "He flung open the door to the truck and climbed quickly inside."(pg147). He has no fear if anybody would catch him. He has a friend who, he cares about. Back at school he never cares about anybody and nobody cares about him.

At the end of the story Stanley return to his home as a confident boy and has changed as an optimistic person. When he goes to god's thumb and finds water in there. "He like himself now"(pg186). Before that he didn't liked himself but, now he likes himself due to his luck, also because of the curse his family has and nothing good would happen to him.

I think Stanley would have positive attitude, self confidence and courageous on himself. He will have friends back at school. Nobody would bully him.
